V. Scope of Competence:
Dr. Hutchinson approaches supervision from a collaborative, humanistic framework. The general areas that receive attention in supervision include the supervisee’s personal awareness, counseling skills, and professional behaviors. Supervisory roles assumed by her include teacher, evaluator, consultant, and counselor. She follows a developmental approach to supervision primarily using the teacher role with novice supervisees and consultation with more experienced supervisees. Audio and videotapes, live observation, Interpersonal Process Recall, and case report are all utilized in the supervision process. She encourages and promotes the reflective practitioner framework. Therefore, she works with supervisees to become aware of their thoughts and feelings that occur with respect to the counseling relationship and process. Facilitating this awareness, including attention to the motivation behind interventions, is an important aspect of her work, such as upholding ethical standards, ensuring client welfare, and promoting psychological growth across the supervisee lifespan.
