What is DBT therapy and how can it help me?
DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) was created by Marsha Linehan to help clients learn to deal with overwhelming emotions by utilizing coping skills to help them with emotions such as anger, sadness, and anxiety. Therefore, if you have issues regulating overwhelming emotions, DBT may help you. DBT is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that uses techniques like mindfulness to help people regulate their emotions and distress, find new ways of interpreting disturbing events, and learn how to problem solve and deal with interpersonal conflict.
Further, some concepts such as mindfulness help most clients because individuals’ depression and anxiety are related to focusing on the past or the future. By learning how to stay in the present and add positive coping thoughts, symptoms of distress may decrease significantly and become manageable. Although DBT is usually taught in a closed group weekly format, DBT skills can be taught in weekly individual therapy sessions.
Group modules include:
- Mindfulness
- Emotion Regulation
- Distress Tolerance
- Interpersonal Effectiveness
